CMA CGM has revealed a new alliance with Google aimed at embedding artificial intelligence (AI) into its worldwide shipping operations, the company announced on Thursday.
This collaboration will also encompass CEVA Logistics, a subsidiary of CMA CGM that provides third-party logistics services.
According to a company statement, Google’s expertise will assist CMA CGM in “enhancing vessel routing, container management, and inventory optimization to deliver goods more efficiently and economically, while also reducing environmental impact.”
The shipping giant expressed that this partnership will boost its operational efficiency, responsiveness, and adaptability to changes in the market, ultimately elevating customer service standards.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, stated, “This initiative is a pivotal element of our digital strategy and investments, signifying a major leap in our ongoing transformation. With Google’s collaboration, we are poised to spearhead the digital revolution in the maritime and logistics sectors.”
Initially, Google’s AI capabilities will be utilized to optimize the 10.3 million square meters of warehouse space managed by CEVA.
The announcement follows recent assertions by Google researchers in early July, proposing that their new optimization tool could significantly enhance network efficiency for shipping companies, potentially doubling profits, increasing container deliveries by 13%, and achieving these improvements with 15% fewer ships.
This deal marks another significant AI investment by CMA CGM, following a €100 million commitment in November for establishing an AI research lab in Paris and ongoing support for startups through its Ze Box accelerator program, focusing on AI-driven solutions for logistics and transport challenges.
